How it works

Get started in 3 steps

1

Apply barcode labels

Label assets with barcodes in a format MapTrack supports. Standard barcode formats work with our scanning workflows.

2

Scan to identify and update

Field staff scan barcodes to open the asset record. Check in/out, update status or complete forms from the same screen. Dedicated scanners supported where needed.

3

Bulk scanning and audits

Run bulk scan workflows for verification and stocktakes. See what's present, missing or overdue. Same audit benefits as QR with barcode hardware.

Key benefits

Why barcode tracking beats manual lookups

Fast identification

No manual entry of asset IDs. Scan and go. Especially useful in storerooms or high-volume barcode environments.

Audit trail

Scan history and timestamps for accountability. Bulk scans give a clear picture for audits and loss control.

Works with QR

MapTrack supports both barcode and QR. Use barcode where you have existing labels or prefer barcode hardware; use QR where camera scanning is preferred.

One platform

Barcode-tracked assets sit with QR and GPS-tracked assets. One register, one set of compliance and maintenance workflows.

Use cases

Barcode scanning for warehouses and sites

Storeroom and tool crib

Scan assets in and out of the storeroom. Track who has what. Run periodic bulk scans to verify stock and catch missing items.

Existing barcode labels

If you already use barcode labels on assets, MapTrack can work with compatible formats so you don't have to relabel everything.

Frequently asked questions

What is barcode asset tracking?
Barcode asset tracking uses barcode labels affixed to physical assets so they can be quickly identified by scanning with a barcode reader or compatible device. Scanning the barcode opens the asset record in MapTrack, where staff can check in or out, update status, run audits and complete compliance forms without manual data entry.
How does barcode tracking work in MapTrack?
You apply barcode labels to your assets in a format MapTrack supports, then link each barcode to an asset record in the register. Field staff scan the barcode with a dedicated scanner or compatible device to pull up the asset and take action. Bulk scan workflows allow entire storerooms or sites to be audited quickly.
What barcode formats does MapTrack support?
MapTrack supports common barcode formats including Code 128, Code 39 and other standard 1D barcodes. If you have existing barcode labels on assets, contact us to confirm compatibility before relabelling. 2D barcodes and QR codes are also supported in the same platform.
Which plan includes barcode asset tracking?
Barcode scanning and identification is available on all MapTrack plans. Bulk scanning, audit workflows and mixed barcode/QR tracking are available across Starter, Professional and Enterprise plans. Try it free or book a demo to see it in action.
Do we need dedicated barcode scanners?
Dedicated barcode scanners are supported in high-volume or storeroom environments where speed matters. For lower-volume use cases, many standard barcodes can be scanned with a smartphone camera. We can advise on hardware based on your scanning volume and environment.
Can we use both barcodes and QR codes in the same system?
Yes. MapTrack supports mixed tracking: barcode for some assets, QR codes for others, and GPS where devices are installed. All asset types share the same register, compliance workflows and maintenance records. You are not locked into a single identification method.
How do I set up barcode tracking for my assets?
Start by importing or creating your assets in the MapTrack register. Then assign barcode values to each asset record, either by scanning existing labels or printing new ones. Staff can begin scanning immediately once labels are linked. The onboarding team helps with bulk imports and label configuration.
How does MapTrack handle bulk barcode scanning for audits?
Bulk scan workflows let you scan multiple assets in sequence to verify their location and custody. After scanning, MapTrack highlights any assets that are missing, in the wrong location or overdue for inspection. This makes stocktakes and site audits significantly faster than manual checks.
What is the difference between barcode and QR code tracking?
Standard barcodes (1D) store a numeric or alphanumeric ID and are read by a laser or camera scanner at a specific angle. QR codes (2D) store more data, can be scanned at any angle with a smartphone camera and support links to asset records. Both are valid for asset tracking; the best choice depends on your hardware, environment and label durability requirements.
